How I Turned My Safari Experience Into a Coloring Book to Sell on Amazon KDP

It’s been a little quiet around here lately, but for a good reason. I’ve been building behind the scenes.

If you’ve been following my journey, you know I’m passionate about helping everyday people discover how to turn what they already know, love and have experienced into digital products they can sell.

And while I’ve been building new resources and trainings around that, I’ve also been challenging myself to do the same thing: create, experiment and put these ideas into practice myself.

One of those experiments started somewhere I definitely wasn’t expecting…

On safari.

After one of my favourite safari experiences, I came home with photographs, videos and incredible memories. I wasn’t thinking about creating a product at the time—I was simply enjoying the experience.

But when I looked through my photographs later, I started seeing them differently.

The wildlife. The landscapes. The peaceful feeling of being away from everyday life.

I asked myself:

“What if I could turn this experience into something creative that another person could enjoy?”

That question eventually became Color Your Escape: Safari — A Relaxing African Safari Coloring Adventure for Adults.

And it reminded me of something I want you to remember too:

Sometimes your next product idea isn’t something you need to invent. It may already be hiding in your own life.

From Safari Photos to a Coloring Book Idea

I didn’t want to simply put random safari illustrations into a book.

I wanted to create a relaxing experience for adults who love travel, wildlife, nature and creative activities.

That led to the name Color Your Escape—a concept built around taking a break from everyday life through coloring.

I also realised this didn’t have to be one book. Different destinations and travel experiences could inspire an entire coloring book series.

Turning My Safari Memories Into Coloring Pages

I went back through my photographs and videos looking for moments that could translate well into coloring pages.

Some pages were inspired directly by my safari experiences, including an elephant near the waterhole, wildlife viewed from an underground tunnel, zebras outside my room and a lion resting after a morning hunt.

I also used ChatGPT to brainstorm additional scenes that fitted the safari theme and the peaceful experience I wanted the book to create.

The goal wasn’t to copy every photograph exactly. It was to take the memory and feeling behind the photograph and turn it into an illustration that would be enjoyable to color.

Creating and Refining the Coloring Pages

Creating the illustrations required more refining than simply generating an image.

Some backgrounds needed simplifying. Objects had to be removed or repositioned. Details sometimes needed correcting.

For every page, I kept asking:

Is it enjoyable to color? Are the lines clear? Is there enough detail without making it overwhelming?

That’s an important lesson when using AI to create products:

Generating something isn’t the same as creating a finished product.

You still have to make decisions based on the person who will eventually use it.

Preparing My Coloring Book for Amazon KDP

Once the illustrations were complete, I arranged the interior, designed the cover and prepared the files for Amazon KDP.

That included checking the book dimensions, image quality, margins, bleed, cover measurements and final print preview.

And finally, I published:

Color Your Escape: Safari

I’ve ordered an author copy, and my next step is seeing how the physical book actually turned out.

I’ll be sharing that process too—including anything I discover that needs correcting.

Your Next Digital Product Idea Could Be Hiding in Your Life

The biggest lesson from creating this book wasn’t just how to make a coloring book.

It was recognising that product ideas are everywhere.

Your knowledge could become an ebook or course. Your methods could become templates. Your routines could become planners. Your hobbies, photographs and experiences could inspire completely different products.

Instead of always asking, “What digital product should I create?”, try asking:

“What do I already know, love or have experience with that I could turn into something valuable or enjoyable for someone else?”

Your next product idea might be much closer than you think.
