For a long time, vacations felt like something I had to plan around my salary — or wait for the right work trip to come with per diem.
But over time, I learned a different way.
In this post, I want to share one of the most practical ways you can start paying for your vacations without depending on your 9–5 salary or per diem.
And before we go any further, let’s clarify two things.
What I Mean by “Vacation”
When I say vacation, I mean travelling away from your normal environment to actually rest.
Not working remotely.
Not checking emails or doing Status Reports.
A proper vacation.
And let’s be honest — a proper vacation needs money i.e paying for your flights/SGR, Uber, accommodation, enjoyment etc
All that needs funding.
Why Salary and Per Diem Make Vacations Hard
When I mention per diem, I’m talking about that allowance you get when work sends you on a trip. You only receive it if you’re sent — and sometimes that doesn’t happen at all.
So in short? You can’t control it.
If you’ve been longing to take a vacation but somehow things never work out, you’ll relate to this:
- Your salary disappears as soon as it lands in your bank account
- Or the per diem you’ve been waiting for feels like it’s playing hide and seek
So vacations keep getting postponed.

Why I Believe Vacations Are Necessary (Not a Luxury)
I don’t know about you, but one of my favourite vacation destinations is anywhere there’s a beach.
There’s something about waking up to the ocean view.
It calms me down.
It cools my mind.
I actually get more creative there. My mind relaxes, and honestly, some of my best ideas have been born while I was at the beach.That’s why I strongly believe taking a proper vacation once in a while is not a luxury — it’s necessary.
The Struggle I Used to Have
Looking back, I really struggled to pay for proper vacations.
Why?
Because I was depending on:
- salary savings
- and per diem
And both are unpredictable.
Salary already has too many responsibilities:
- bills
- rent
- everyday life
And per diem?
You can’t control:
- when work will send you somewhere
- if they’ll send you at all
- or how much they’ll give you
So vacations kept getting postponed.
The Shift That Changed Everything
Fast forward to today….things are different for me now.
These days, I can afford to take an occasional vacation without depending on my salary or per diem. And that’s thanks to creating and selling digital products.
What Digital Products Are (Simply Explained)
Digital products are things you create once and sell online.
Examples include:
- ebooks
- guides
- checklists
- templates
- short classes
You package what you already know, solve a real problem for someone, and sell it digitally.
Here’s the powerful part:
Digital products are not tied to your time the way a job is.
They can earn:
- while you’re spending time with your family
- while you’re on vacation
- even while you’re sleeping
That’s the difference.
“But I Don’t Know What to Sell…”
This is the most common objection I hear.
“I don’t know what to sell.”
“I’m not an expert.”
“I don’t have big ideas.”
Let me tell you something important.
You don’t need a huge idea.
You just need to look at:
- what you already know
- what you’ve done
- what you’re good at
You don’t need to be the best in the world — just a few steps ahead of someone and able to solve a real problem.
If people ask you how you do something:
- how you budget
- how you got a job
- how you run your business
- how you manage your time
You’re sitting on a goldmine.
That question is already a digital product idea.
